What is your carbon footprint?.
Carbon footprint - A representation of the effect human activities have on the climate in terms of the total amount of greenhouse gases produced (measured in units of carbon dioxide).
Carbon dioxide - (CO2) A greenhouse gas produced through respiration and the decomposition of organic substances.
Combustion of fossil fuels is primarily responsible for increased atmospheric concentrations of this gas. Over 40% of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions, the main greenhouse gas which causes climate change, actually come from the things we do every day. Things like leaving lights on unnecessarily or overfilling the kettle all waste energy and result in needless carbon dioxide emissions.
All this adds to your carbon footprint and the higher that your carbon footprint is the more it is affecting OUR enviroment. Well warm are helping with this to make sure your home is correctly insulated, reduceing emmisions.
What can I do?
There are many things you can do to change your daily activities so slightly that you'll hardly notice the difference. With just a few non-life changing steps, you could cut your CO2 by 60%. Here's a list of small things you can do to make a big difference:
CFLs use 60% less energy than a regular bulb. This simple switch will save about 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
Move your thermostat down 2 deg; in winter
Almost half of the energy we use in our homes goes to heating and cooling. You could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment.
Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer when you’re not using them will save you thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Buy electronics that don't use standby mode.
Properly insulating your walls and ceilings can save 25% of your home heating bill and 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
Double glaizingDouble glazing works by trapping air between two panes of glass creating an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss, noise and condensation. Double glazing can save a household around 720kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year.
Just take these three easy steps
